Cyprus Services Rambling Club is one of the oldest
clubs still flourishing within the Services sporting
scene. It all began back in 1970 when a handful of
service families living in Limassol came up with the
idea of going for a walk and a picnic somewhere out of
town on Sundays. Membership of the CSRC is open to
all service personnel and their families, UKBCs and
expatriates. This gives the club a rich diversity of
experience and interest that is very noticeable if you
listen to the various conversations along the way. The
CSRC rambles every second Sunday with an average of
around 60 Members taking part and occasionally, can
boast a formidable group of 120 walkers. Family
membership is €8.50 per year and each walk you
participate in will cost €3 per adult and €1.50 for
under 18s. For full details of a Club that takes you
to areas few get to see, visit our website at

collect signatures online for a petition aimed at
banning poison such as Lanate. It is a move to back an
MP legislation proposal due to come up soon. You can
find more information at http://cyprusgreens.blogspot.com/2008/03/lanate.html It's in Greek but it only asks that you cut and paste
the short text and fill in your name and phone and

LANIA GETS BROADBAND
Internet users in Lania, Doros and elsewhere have
become increasingly frustrated as surrounding
villages, including Trimiklini and Sylikou, get a
Broadband internet service whilst others are
by-passed. Cytanet have been unable to offer an
explanation for this and will not give any idea of
when, or even if, broadband will arrive in all the
mountain villages.
City Cell Communications has come to the rescue with a satellite-based service that beams wireless broadband direct to your home without the need for a phone line. They have been supplying Paphos district for two years and now supply Lania and surrounding areas from a satellite installation in Platres. Connection speeds vary considerably from 74Kbps – 460Kbps upload and from 206Kbps – 1264 Kbps download, with no limit on the amount you can up or download. The cost is E340 for installation and E43 per month subscription. Already, a few local users are enjoying relatively high speed and reasonably reliable internet access via City Cell.
City Cell can be contacted at their shop at 114A
Gladstonos Street, Limassol. Tel: 25371000, 99797976.
Email: info@citycell.tv. www.citycell.tv.

and I’ll let you know about rehearsals etc. I look

LANIA LADIES OPEN COURTYARDS
The lady gardeners of Lania once again will open their courtyards for the weekend of Saturday 31 May and Sunday 1 June. As well as a warm welcome and some delightful gardens, there will be music on offer with local pianist Andrew Oliver performing on the Saturday and members of the Cyprus Youth Orchestra on the Sunday.
CATSNIP COMES TO LANIA - For centuries cats have been an integral part of life
in Cyprus. In fact, the first evidence of cat
ownership in Cyprus dates back to 7500 BC. Following
this tradition, we, in Lania, are blessed with
beautiful and generally very healthy domestic and
feral cats. Both the residents and visitors obtain
great pleasure from their company, but here’s the rub – there are just too many feral cats in Lania.
Did you know that one female produces on average 6
female and 6 male offspring each year. By year 5 this
will have increased the population to a total of
approximately 33,613 cats. Of course, even with the
natural illness and mortality rate, this is just far
too many for a small village to support! In the past,
means have been found to cull the feral population -
many of these methods are just not acceptable, and an
alternative has to be found.
Catsnip was established by two ladies in Limassol
approximately 18 months ago. Already, Catsnip has
neutered 800 cats of the estimated 11,000 feral cats
in Limassol. We are fortunate in that they have
allowed us to use their name, their expertise and
contacts to set up a ‘branch’ here in Lania.
We have just started to raise funds to neuter our
feral cats in the village. Selected cats will be
caught, photographed and their details recorded. They
will be neutered by a fully qualified veterinary
surgeon, cared for whilst recovering and then released
back into the cat community. In this way, we hope to
control the feral cat population and avoid other more
desperate measures being used.
We are happy to report that a very successful start to
the scheme has been made. Enthusiasm is high, and at
the Lania Tavern Disco on 29 December, CYP275 was
raised from a raffle and auction. Very many thanks to
all those who so generously contributed to the Catsnip
funds at this event. In addition, other donations
have been received, including the sale of Catsnip
calendars which has brought the final amount raised to
CYP350, at the end of 2007. Thanks to all for making
this such a successful start to Lania Catsnip.
(Please note that some Calendars are still available
at CYP3.50).
We are greatly encouraged by the support from all
quarters of Lania and beyond. We hope to hold many
fund raising events in the coming year. If you would
like to help us by holding a coffee morning,
sponsoring a cat, or have ideas that would move things
along, please get in touch with Susan or Veronica.

LANIA GETS A MAKEOVER. You can't move for builders trucks in Lania these days
as construction workers work hard to restore the
village centre. Many of the old houses are being
refurbished with plenty of beautiful stonework on
view. The narrow lanes are being re-cobbled and
certainly add much charm to the place. The old Boys
School and the adjacent old Olive Press are undergoing
major restoration and should be ready for occupation
late in 2008.

DO ALL ROADS REALLY LEAD TO LANIA?
At the recent Art Exhibition to draw attention to the
new main road and the strong opposition to it by all
sectors, rumours abounded, such as: - 4 of the 5
Members of Lania Village Council are against the need
for a new road - The Limassol District Officer has
launched an Inquiry into reported speculative buying
of land along the projected routes - The Village
Council is to hold “Open Meetings” of its proceedings
to counter the view that it is no longer transparent
in its dealings over the new road - Ministers are
taking a closer look at the effect of the local
opposition to this “wasteful” project in the run-
up to the election - Laiki Bank sponsorship of Litter
Bins, discarded all over the village roads, is
affecting views on their Bank - Key personalities are turning their backs on the village Council in horror. -

SYLICOU - Rates increase. Rates in Sylicou have just shot up for the second year by a further 25% in addition to the 30% increase last year. Suggestion: should there be a market survey of rates rises? Not the actual rates but the percentage increases.
Reporters have noticed an alarming increase in Commandaria village rates.
Increases of 30% in 2006 and a further 25% this year have been imposed one village. Spending by villages now includes official cars! Why? Your help is requested to report: the percentage increase in rates in your village, this year (2007). On what basis are rates calculated? The wide rumour is that it is
based on the Chairman of the Village Council's view on how much the
rate payer can pay! What is the nationally agreed rate rise per annum? Is it linked to the rate of inflation? Who controls and verifies the basis? Is it the District Officers? How do rate payers object to a rate rise? To district Officers?
How does one appeal? To the Ombudsman? All suggestions gratefully received. -
Kouris Magpie
RATES:
The President of Sylikou replies. I am Costas Polis, The Chairman of the Village Council
of Sylikou. I am angry with the article written by
Kouris Magpie about the rates in Sylikou. It is all
bad. The rates in this village are the best in the
Commandaria region. The Council has a car to do the
Council business. If residents do not agree their
rates they can complain to the District Officer within
15 days of the rates demand. If anyone has a problem
with this system they should call me or Fax, on
25470732. I am always happy to explain and help,
Yours faithfully,
Costas Polis,
Chairman of the Village Council of Sylikou. 13th
November 2007.
TRIMIKLINI - New shops and walls. There are 2 new and exciting shops in Trimiklini. Both shops are on the main road, between the church and the Water Falls Café, on the right coming down the Mountain. A FISH SHOP (Psaragora) and a BAKERY (Fourno). It has been reported by several delighted shoppers that the owner of the FISH SHOP has a big fish store in Limassol as well and he brings fresh fish every day to Trimiklini. The BAKERY is beside the Water Falls Café. They bake great cakes as well. Anyone passing through the village will see workmen crafting many beautiful stone walls all along the main road. Will the pavements be paved next?
Editors Note: in the autimn of 2007 the pavements were
indeed completed and very nice it looks too!

NEW MEETS OLD. The centre of Doros Village has been transfomed by the laying of new cobblestones where there was once concrete. Many of the village roads and lanes were disrupted by the laying of new water supply pipe work, which was completed last year with the trenches either concreted or tarmaced. The new stones blend in well with the original and the second phase of the works will see the outer road around the village cobbled. Well done to all involved in this project. - Doros Dave.
